To commemorate World Environment Day
with a theme of Ecosystem Restoration, JASTRe conducted a two-day roadshow on 5th
and 6th June 2021 at the Ministry of Development. Carrying the theme ‘Towards
Achieving an Eco Nation’, the workshop showcases efforts, programs and services
that support and contribute to the protection and restoration of the
environment and ecosystems, where the initiatives from Government agencies and
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), as well as environmentally friendly
services and products that are offered from the private sector and Micro, Small
and Medium Entrepreneurs (MSMEs). A total of 52 local creative artists and
volunteers also willingly channeled their creativity, time and effort in
realizing the Department’s vision to create and build artwork made from
reusable materials. Their artwork was also displayed during the roadshow to
promote environmental awareness, especially in ecosystem restoration through
the creativity of youths.
Moreover, several other activities
were also part of the roadshow, including the prize presentation for Floating
Waste Collector Conceptual Design Competition, including a showcase of the
conceptual designs where the 1st prize winner’s concept designs will be made
into a prototype and subsequently upgraded and upscaled to and effective and
efficient technology for cleaning our rivers. Then it was followed by the
launching of the Nationwide Cleaning Campaign under the Main Committee on
Cleanliness Issues, where the campaign is divided into two: coastal clean-up
campaign (marine debris) led by the Ministry of Development, and the clean-up
campaign on land to be led by the Ministry of Home Affairs; as well as
launching of the Tree Planting Handbook which was made by JASTRe’s park and
recreation division with hope that it can be used as a reference and guide for
the public to jointly support the Government’s efforts towards achieving the
target of planting 500,000 new trees by 2035, to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions that contribute to climate change.
