Nationwide Cleaning Campaign - Marine Debris: Coastal Marvel
To commemorate World Environment Day
2021, a Nationwide Beach Cleanup Campaign named Coastal Marvel led by the
Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) was held on the 13th
June 2021 at Muara Recreational Beach (Brunei-Muara District), Danau Beach
(Tutong District) and Lumut Beach (Belait District) simultaneously. The
campaign with the slogan ‘It Takes a Nation To Make Brunei Environment Clean’
was planned to be held once a month until December 2021 and is expected to
encourage society to instill a sense of responsibility in playing their roles
to ensure our environment is clean, healthy and safe.
The event was in collaboration with
Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) as well as volunteers from Government,
Non-Governmental Organisation and the public. During the first instalment of
Coastal Marvel, a total of 2,785.5kg of wastes was
collected from all three beaches, 1,309.5kg of which were plastic bottles,
619.5kg general plastic waste and 853.5kh of other types of wastes. The month of July was held at
Meragang Beach on 18th July 2021. Over 350 volunteers participated and
collected around 2,826kg of marine debris, making the total data of wastes collected from the first Coastal Marvel to 5,608.5kg.
