| MEDIA RELEASE ASEAN-China High Level Forum on Green and Sustainable Development ASEAN-China Environmental Cooperation Forum 2021 25-26 October 2021 |
- The ASEAN-China High Level Forum on Green and Sustainable Development, ASEAN China Environmental Cooperation Forum 2021 was held on 25-26 October 2021 via video conference co-hosted by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
- The forum was attended by high-level representatives from ASEAN Member States, People's Republic of China, the ASEAN Secretary General and youths from ASEAN Member States and People's Republic of China. Brunei Darussalam was led by Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Ar. Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, Deputy Minister of Development and Senior Officials from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation.
- The forum aims to implement the outcomes of the 23rd ASEAN-China Summit in ecological conservation and environmental protection, and to facilitate the implementation of the Framework of China-ASEAN Environmental Cooperation Strategy and Action Plan (2021-2025) and exchange experiences in particular on climate change and biodiversity conservation.
- Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Ar. Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, Deputy Minister of Development, has delivered his statement during the High Level Dialogue on Climate Change and Promoting Green Development reflecting the importance of tackling climate change in achieving a resilient nation. He highlighted various strategies and initiatives taken by Brunei Darussalam to mitigate and adapt climate change impacts. One such efforts is the introduction of the Brunei National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP), which outlines 10 key strategies that would pave pathways toward a low carbon and climate-resilient Brunei Darussalam. As a predominantly oil and gas country, Brunei Darussalam have placed great emphasis on the just transition of our energy sector through carbon capture, utilisation and storage, zero routine flaring, and carbon pricing. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam are also leveraging on Nature-Based solutions by planting 500,000 new trees by 2035.
- Ms. Martinah Haji Tamit, Acting Director of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation was invited to deliver an opening remarks during the Sub-Forum ASEAN-China Youth Leadership: Simulated Environmental Ministers' Dialogue. She emphasized the need for an integrated and holistic approach in coordinating across different levels of cooperation, developing effective responses to such challenges in facing uncertainties for future generations. She also shared that Brunei Darussalam has successfully organized and hosted the inaugural ASEAN Youth on Climate Action (ASEANyouCAN) Dialogue where passionate young people of ASEAN convened to discuss pressing climate change issues around the region, where the outcome of the event released a Bandar Seri Begawan Declaration on ASEAN Youth for Climate Change Action that depicts their collective position on climate change in the region. she hoped that the ASEANyouCAN platform will encourage and allow the young people of ASEAN to engage, participate, educate, communicate and generate fresh innovative solutions to address climate change.
- The Delegates congratulated the People's Republic of China on the successful hosting of ASEAN-China Environmental Cooperation Forum under the 2021 ASEAN-China Year of Sustainable Development Cooperation that was launched on 28th May 2021 in Beijing, People's Republic of China.
