On the 26th of April 2021, the
Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation was invited to give a talk
regarding ways to reduce plastic consumption and food wastage in the catering
business, focusing more on caterers that cater to the Government. This is in
support of the initiatives under the Green Protocol that was launched by the
Brunei Climate Change Secretariat, as well as in line with JASTRe’s existing
initiatives to reduce the amount of waste generated and to promote the concept
of 3R.
The reason why catering business
owners that cater for the government were selected was because the idea of
reducing plastic consumption and zero waste catering should begin from the
government side (lead by example). It is so that the idea can be taken in more
slowly by the public and to be a good example for them as well. In that
awareness talk, JASTRe presented on the impacts towards the environment through
the view of plastic in a holistic way as well as provide alternatives from
using plastic. The talks also highlighted the rising issue of food waste in
Brunei.
